Swedish automaker Volvo Car will introduce its first all-new vehicle as a unit of China’s Zhejiang Geely Holding Group Co Ltd in late 2014, Volvo Chief Executive Hakan Samuelsson said on Wednesday.Codenamed SPA (Scalable Product Architecture), the new platform can accommodate a variety of powertrains, including Volvo’s new plug-in hybrid system, and will underpin the successor to the S80 sedan as well.

Unhappy with the second-generation XC90’s delay, Volvo wants to commence production of the new mid-size SUV in late 2014. “What we have learned about the XC90 is that you have to be very careful when delaying product development, you are borrowing money from the future and you have to pay it back with interest,” Volvo CEO Hakan Samuelsson said in Geneva. “It was not very smart to delay that program.”

In addition to new styling, the new XC90 is also likely to use new engines. That’s because Volvo says it’s developing a new family of 4-cylinder engines with turbocharging and direct injection. Those two features improve performance and fuel economy, making us think they’ll likely show up in other upcoming Volvo models, too.
If the XC90 does get a 4-cylinder, it will mark a radical departure from today’s model. While the current XC90 has used 5-, 6-, and 8-cylinder motors, it’s never offered a 4-cylinder. A 240-horsepower 3.2-liter 6-cylinder is the only option in the 2013 XC90.
